Kigezi Bishop Urges Christians to Emulate Uganda Martyrs, Reject Corruption

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, has called on Christians across the country to emulate the faith, courage, and commitment demonstrated by the Uganda Martyrs and to reject corruption and other practices that distance people from God.

Bishop Akanjuna made the remarks while addressing journalists at his office on Rugarama Hill in Kabale District ahead of Uganda Martyrs Day commemorations on June 3.

The Uganda Martyrs, who were executed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda, are remembered for their unwavering commitment to the Christian faith. Despite facing persecution, threats, and death, they refused to renounce their belief in Jesus Christ. Of the 45 recognized Uganda Martyrs, 23 were Anglican and 22 were Catholic.

Bishop Akanjuna said the martyrs became the seed of the Church because they remained faithful to God even in the most difficult circumstances. He noted that their sacrifice played a significant role in the spread and growth of Christianity in Uganda and beyond.

According to the bishop, the example set by the martyrs remains relevant today, particularly at a time when many people are abandoning Christian values in pursuit of wealth and personal gain.

He expressed concern over the increasing cases of corruption in both public and private institutions, saying the desire for material wealth has led many individuals to compromise their faith and integrity.

“Corruption continues to deprive communities of essential services and undermines national development,” Bishop Akanjuna said.

The bishop observed that some individuals involved in corruption have adopted alternative terms such as misappropriation of funds, embezzlement, and financial irregularities to describe the vice. However, he emphasized that regardless of the terminology used, corruption remains a sin that denies citizens access to services and opportunities they rightfully deserve.

He particularly condemned the diversion of public resources intended for critical sectors such as health, education, and community development. According to the bishop, when funds meant for hospitals and health centres are stolen, ordinary citizens suffer and lives are unnecessarily put at risk.

Bishop Akanjuna challenged leaders and public servants to embrace honesty, accountability, and transparency in the execution of their duties.

He stressed that leadership should be viewed as a responsibility to serve the people rather than an avenue for personal enrichment.

He further noted that although Christians today may not face the same form of persecution experienced by the Uganda Martyrs, they continue to encounter challenges that test their faith.

He cited sickness, poverty, social pressures, and other forms of hardship as obstacles that often tempt believers to abandon Christian principles.

“I urge Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and trust in God even when confronted with difficulties. The Uganda Martyrs provide a powerful example of perseverance, sacrifice, and commitment that every Christian should strive to emulate,” Bishop Akanjuna said.
